Interview 1
Name: N. E. H.

Age: 43
1. So, how many people were their in your house? And did they all live in the same house, or not?
Well, my parents had in total 5 children with me being the oldest. When I was younger I live with both my parents, but also 2 younger sisters and 2 younger brothers. We moved 1 time to a house that was recently build. Later on I got married and moved to the Netherlands, though my other siblings still live it the same house. I still miss them, but almost every year I visit them durig the summer vacation with my 2 children.
2. I see, and what about your family? Is it big or small?
It depends on what you mean. I mean I have two children and 4 siblings. But if you mean like the whole family, than it will be really big. My family extends to the point that we live in 6 countries in total: the Netherlands, Morocco, Spain, France, Belgium and Germany. My father had 8 brothers and 3 sisters, my mother had 3 stepbrothers.
3. What were you parents’ profession?
The profession… My mom didn’t work, she mostly went out shopping or stayed at home to do chores. However, my father used to work. He had his own company that worked in the growing of fruits and vegetables. His company was pretty big, and he was well known in the town.
4. And where did you live exactly?
We lived in a city called Al Aroui, in the north of Morocco
5. Do you remember any historical facts or event when your were a teenager either in India, EU or worldwide?
In my time, nothing really happened. Though at school we talked about WWII.
6. Alright, now we will talk about media mass. Media mass is basically just newspaper, tv, magazines, radio etc. My questions are: what types of media mass where popular/available/
Back in the day, the media mass wasn’t anything like this. These days we have phones, TVs, magazines etc. But back in the day, people mostly only had one TV and a radio. You could still get newspapers etc. A funny fact about the TVs is, that back then you (at least in Morocco) could only watch TV from 6 pm till 12 am and then no more. If you turned the TV on at 5 pm, you will get nothing. That is why we always used to play with the neighbouring kids and not sit in front of the TV the whole day. Even if it was time to watch TV, my grandmother used to tell us stories. We would sit in a circle and she would tell us stories of her past.
7. Interesting, and what media mass was available at your house?
As I already mentioned, we used to have a TV. We also had a radio and sometimes we bought newspapers. I always read them, I loved reading the news.
8. And how expensive was it to purchase a radio, a television and the newspapers?
In that time, it was expensive. But if you compare it to today, it looks pretty cheap. Many people were poor. So for example 150 euro these days seems like nothing, but back in the day it was pretty expensive.
9. Oh, was internet available?
No, there was no internet back then.
10. What kind of mass media was popular in your family when you were a teenager?
The radio was the most popular in the family, since it worked for 24 hours unlike the TV. But mostly we would go out and play, instead of sitting at home.
11. Was reading popular?
Yes, reading was important. Since reading is like a key to everything, so people who were as old as I am could read. Unlike people like my parents who didn’t go to school, but still they managed to teach us many stuff.
12. Was a well-equipped library available?
No, the town were I lived in no libraries were available. If you wanted to read a book, you had to go to a bookstore and buy it. Even so, mostly you would find books for adults and not teenagers.
13. So much time of your daily life did you spend on mass media, when you were a teenager?
I spend about 2 hours of my daily life on mass media. Me and my siblings would play outside, go back home to watch TV (there was only one hour of cartoons everyday), afterwards do homework and then watch TV again.

Not only that, I also tell my children about the past. How people used to live… they really love it.
20. Can you explain what the positive and negative aspects of the mass media were in your country when you were a teenager?
The media had positive and negative aspects. One of the positive aspects was you know about the what happened after you have read it or watched the TV. But the negative part is that the news wasn’t always right or the left a part out. The government had a bit effect on the news and there was no freedom in speech.
21. Did mass media cause bad effects on people when you were a teenager?
People were always curious about the truth. You sometimes got half of the news and always wanted more.
Can you describe briefly how the presence of different types of mass media and of computers and of internet in your household has changed since you were a teenager?
Back then we didn’t have any internet or computer, only a TV and a radio. Many things have change, the technology is now more developed. It is way better that back then.
What are the positive aspects of these changes? Are there any negative aspects of these changes?
The changes have many positive aspects, you can now speak however you want and know about everything. Especially with the internet and the media, instagram, snapchat, Facebook etc. You can chat with people all around the world, unlike back in the day when you could only send a written letter.
