The 1st and 2nd generation of mass media
Mass media, mass media is technology that is intended to reach a mass of audience. Mass media has many platforms, but the most common are newspapers, magazines, radios, television and the internet. But the mass media now isn’t as the as back in the day. Over the generations, mass media has change and the its usage has increased. On this page, you will read how mass media changed and know more on the differences of (grand)parents form different cultures, the Dutch and the Moroccan.
The 1st generation
During the 1st generation there weren’t many mass media platforms available, not as now were we have different apps with various features. Back then, people mostly used radios and newspapers, to know about what happened around the world. As already mentioned, there was no internet available, so people couldn’t use any devices such as the computer.
But since you didn’t have any internet nor a computer didn’t mean that you could just sit around and be bored. Most kids would go out and play with the neighbouring kids, other would read. Reading was more popular than now, but people do have different opinions about it. “Well, reading was quite popular is my time, but I didn’t read as much. I didn’t really enjoy it,” says one of our Dutch interviewees. Back then, reading was more important and popular. “I would usually read at least an hour or two a day, it was quite fun,” says one of our Dutch interviewee.
There were also, of course, preferences in the mass media. Some love comics, while others loved reading papers. But one thing that they all had in common was the fact that the news was always boring. “You had to just sit there on the sofa and listen to the news, which is quite boring if you ask me. But luckily these days you can just look it up on the media, if you missed anything,” confesses one of the Dutch interviewees.
The 2nd generation
Mass media always changes, so of course the mass media from the 1st generation developed. However in the 2nd generation that we interviewed, we are dealing with some cultural differences (people form different countries). And so you can come to the conclusion, that the mass media would differ in a lot of ways and on a lot of platforms.
For example, some interviewees had internet while some didn’t. “Well, we had internet back then, so I would spend at least 1 hour on the computer”, said one of our Dutch interviewee.
“We didn’t have internet, so naturally there was no computer. I would always play outside so to prevent myself from getting bored,” said our Moroccan interviewee.
But even though the interviewees were from different cultures and had different interests, there were still some similarities. All the interviewees from the 2nd generation had radios, tv’s and newspapers available. And reading became quite popular with time. Most of our interviewees agree that reading was important, and that they read for 2 hours or more (some even before bed time or just in the afternoon). “Reading was and still is quite important-,” says our Dutch interviewees. “- reading is like a key to everything,” continues our Moroccan interviewee.
The TV wasn’t used as much as it is these days. “There weren’t many channels on TV, and it was pretty boring,” says one of the Dutch interviewees. In Morocco, there were some certain periods that you can watch comedy series. But after about 4 hours it was already over.
Families discussed media among themselves, especially the children. “I would usually read the newspaper and tell my mother about what happened, since my mother didn’t go to school when she was younger,” says our Moroccan interviewee.
“We also discussed mass media among ourselves, it was pretty nice,” says one of our Dutch interviewees.
However, everything has positive and negative aspects. One of the common thoughts, is that you get to know about the news around the world, what happened, how it happened etc. But in some countries, the news was controlled by the government. “You didn’t get the whole story, instead just a big portion or just half of it. I don’t know if it happened in other countries, but I do know that this happened in Morocco,” admits our Moroccan interviewee.
The 1st and 2nd generation
If you compare the 1st and 2nd generation, you will notice that a lot has changed. One of the major changes is the internet. The 1st generation didn’t have computers nor did they say that they had internet. “I would read or I would play with the neighbouring kids,” says one of the 1st generation interviewees.
Though the development doesn’t only have to do with time, it also depends on the culture/ where you’re from. Most of the 2nd generation had internet and computer, our Dutch interviewees admit to it. “Yes, we did have internet and I would usually spend one hour on the computer,” says our Dutch interviewee. “We didn’t have internet, so we didn’t have a computer. I would usually just play outside or read newspapers,” admits our Moroccan interviewee.
The 3rd generation’s opinion
As you may have read in the interviews, each of the interviewees had their own opinion about the current situation of mass media, for example its development and its usage by people. Even us, the 3rd generation and members of the mass media group, have our own opinion regarding this topic of mass media. “Well, I personally think that the mass media these days is way better than back then,” says Antonio,” one of the most common reasons I sometimes hear it that you know more about the world faster than before, an example being the news. Back in the 1st generation, they didn’t have internet, and so they had to sit in front of a tv or read newspaper. And now, well you can still read newspapers or watch the news on tv, but there are special apps on your phone for if you missed something or just want to read.”
It is indeed a fact that due to the development of mass media your knowledge about the news around the world is way faster, than for example back in the 1st generation. But there is far more than only those news apps, there are other platforms that basically help you with anything you like, such as tutorials or for entertainment. The platforms also give you another’s point perspective. How? Well, usually if something happened people give their opinion on the topic in the comment section. Sometimes, they even type jokes as to entertain you.
“Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many other platforms have videos that actually helped me. I love drawing and sometimes I am stuck on something, like drawing a hand. So I just have to look it up and then I get many tutorials on how to draw hand,” informs Sarah, “ That was a bit of topic, but people usually give their opinions in the comment section regarding a certain topic and so giving you another’s point of view. However some comments could be harmful, as to resulting someone in hurting themselves. And so not everything should be taken seriously!”
“Not only that some apps give you the opportunity to talk to people around the word, one of the exemplary apps is called discord. Such an app allows you to talk to other people, sometimes it can be educative. For example if you talk to someone from India on discord, you could ask them more about the India, like what kind of culture they have, what religions they have, what the food is like etc.,” says Katie, “ However such apps are really dangerous, as for the fact that you are talking to strangers. These apps lead to many harmful stuff, that I would rather not discuss. Overall great app, you can make friends but be careful on who you speak to.”
But what about the people that love to read? However they can’t go to the library as for example during the lockdown or the fact that it doesn’t open during Sundays. “Well, for these people there is always digital read. You can either buy and/ or download books on the internet,” informs Tristan, “another good think about this is that the books that you downloaded don’t take space in your home or when traveling and you can read your book, even if you don’t have internet. Just be sure to download it when you do have internet otherwise you can’t read!”
And so there are many other good and bad aspects about mass media. In general our opinion on the current situation with the mass media is pretty much good, however we do think that you should not trust anybody easily on the internet and be careful.
So to conclude, mass media doesn’t depend on time but also on where your from. You will notice that the first generation didn’t really have many differences. Reading was popular at that time, tv’s were pretty much boring… But everything change from the first to the second generation, internet was available and people spend time on the computers. But in some countries, internet wasn’t available and people there would read or play outside. The opinion of the 3rd generation showed on how they feel about mass media these days, as to some have negative and/ or a positive comment.
